Edge AI
Running inference on or near the device, where latency, bandwidth, privacy or resilience rules out the cloud.

Understanding Edge AI
Edge AI runs model inference on local hardware — a device, a gateway or an on-site server — rather than in a central cloud. It is chosen when a round trip is too slow, the data volume is too expensive to transmit, the data should not leave the site, or the system must keep working through a connectivity outage.
Why it matters
It makes decisions possible where centralized processing cannot deliver them: sub-second control responses, high-frequency sensor analysis, and continued operation during network failure.
Problems it addresses
- “Control decisions need sub-second response and the round trip is too slow.”
- “Transmitting full sensor data is prohibitively expensive.”
- “Sites must keep operating during connectivity outages.”
- “Video data cannot leave the site for privacy reasons.”
Capabilities
Edge architecture
Deciding what runs locally and what runs centrally, and why.

Edge deployment and updates
Secure, staged model and software distribution to fleets.
Edge monitoring
Performance and drift monitoring across distributed inference.
Use cases
Visual quality inspection
Real-time defect detection on a production line.
Predictive maintenance
High-frequency vibration and thermal analysis at the asset.
Autonomous operation
Local decision-making that survives disconnection.

Prerequisites, governance and risks
The questions that determine whether this will work in your environment, rather than in a demonstration.
What has to be true first
- Hardware capability assessed against model requirements
- A secure, tested update path for models and firmware
- Monitoring across a distributed fleet
Governance
Model versioning across a fleet is the hard part. Knowing which model version is running where, and being able to roll back safely, is a prerequisite rather than a refinement.
Risks
- Hardware constraints limiting model choice
- Fleet update complexity
- Drift monitoring across distributed inference is harder than centrally
